Putting a fresh spin on the idea of app-based smartphone gaming, renowned toymaker LEGO has introduced its new Life of George app, which combines real-world brick building challenges with virtual interaction and phone camera usage.
In short, Life of George shows players specific design shapes on their phone screen and tasks them to build said items against the clock by selecting from the 144 physical LEGO bricks included with the game.
In order to progress through Life of George’s 120 shape-building challenges (and two levels of difficulty), players must construct their blocks correctly atop an accompanying play mat.
This mat serves as “a green screen” backdrop for the iPhone/iPod Touch camera, which players must use to quickly capture a snapshot of their creation and have it evaluated by the game’s brick recognition technology (Eyecue).
For those of you left wondering about George’s role in all this: George is a virtual software engineer by day, and a bold adventurer by night…
And, as such, each in-game level showcases one of the adventures captured in George’s photo album, and specific items from said adventures need to be replicated in order to move on to the next set of photos.
LEGO: Life of George is currently compatible with the iOS mobile operating platform, which means it runs on Apple’s iPhone and non-telephonic iPod Touch handsets.
Suitable for gamers aged 14 and above, LEGO: Life of George will go on sale from October 1, priced at $29.99 USD.
