Not that Iron Man 2 really needs the kind of exposure a tie-in mobile phone provides, but that hasn’t stopped consumer electronics giant LG from announcing the Ally, a sleek little handset that even has a bit-part role in the new all-action blockbuster sequel.

While the Ally won’t turn you into a mumbling millionaire playboy, aid in the assembly of a jet-powered suit of armour, or prompt the amorous advances of Gwyneth Paltrow, the snazzy phone is set to arrive as the first LG handset powered by Google’s Android operating system.

Details regarding the Ally’s features and functions are sparse at the moment, although an initial promo teaser has revealed that the phone includes a touch-screen interface and also a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

Beyond that, LG boasts that the Ally is also the first Android device to carry the Augmented Reality application, which is currently exclusive to LG and enables users to download exclusive Iron Man 2 content by either visiting www.lgim2.com or by texting 95173.

LG has also said the phone will come complete with a limited edition Marvel comic book – itself carrying Augmented Reality experiences that fans can interact with via their phones.

Expect more on Iron Man 2, the Ally, and Augmented Reality when LG hosts a massive Iron Man 2 marketing event in New York City on May 11.

Iron Man 2 is officially released on May 07, while the Ally handset is scheduled to arrive at retail on May 20.

"The new LG Ally, is it a smartphone or something better?"

We're gonna go with, it's 'just' a smartphone.
