With our Netbook enthusiasm duly refreshed following yesterday’s coverage of the touch-screen ASUS Eee PC T91 and its sexy tablet-esque swivel display, we here at The Tech Herald are positively bursting to tell you all about the new slimline ultra mobile that Lenovo has in the offing.
Introduced by Lenovo, the world’s fourth biggest computer manufacturer, on Monday boasting a ‘thickness’ of less than an inch and a total weight of around a kilo, the new IdeaPad S10-2 is put forth as more of a mini-laptop than a Netbook.
However, obvious S10 similarities aside, a quick scan of its exterior styling and a peek under the hood reveals the fresh-faced platform to be a solid entrant into the already bulging Netbook category.
Beyond the snazzy pattern on the cover to help prospective consumers discern the new model from Lenovo’s existing range of S10s, the S10-2 offers an Intel Atom N270 processor, 1GB of RAM and a data storage ceiling of 160GBs in a hard disk drive format – all fairly standard-issue Netbook specifications.
That core performance is augmented by the Windows XP operating system, a 10.1-inch LCD display, Wi-Fi, a 1.3 mega pixel Web camera, an almost 90 percent full-size keyboard (including left and right shift keys), an enlarged touchpad, VeriFace recognition, and a six-cell battery that promises up to six hours of operation on a single charge.
While all rather par for the course, all is not lost into the ether of Netbook mediocrity with the S10-2, because at least it will support optional 3G wireless connectivity when Lenovo finally unclips the retail leash towards the end of May (integrated 3G is expected to arrive before the end of summer).
Available in colour flavours of black, white, grey and pink, prices for the little IdeaPad S10-2 will start at $349 USD ($399 USD with 3G).
