Looking to apply more of a defined market focus on attracting the ears of its prospective customers, Swiss computer peripherals expert Logitech has this week strengthened its audio portfolio via the purchase of California-based Ultimate Ears.

Splashing the cash to the tune of $34 million USD, Logitech International has secured a long-standing player in the field of custom in-ear monitors, with Ultimate Ears known for providing core equipment for on-stage professionals and sound engineers.

“Ultimate Ears is a perfect fit for Logitech and our audio business,” said Gerald P. Quindlen, Logitech president and CEO regarding the deal. “Since its inception, Ultimate Ears has been driven by innovation, close ties to its customers, and the desire to enable an immersive audio experience.”

However, while an estimated 75 percent of today’s top touring rock musicians currently use the Ultimate Ears custom-fit in-ear monitor while performing on stage, the company has recently branched out and taken its expertise into the consumer world in order to meet the needs of regular music-loving enthusiasts.

With a range of acclaimed Ultimate Ears headphone products already available for popular portable players including the iPod, iPhone and a host of other MP3 devices, the multimillion dollar acquisition should enable Logitech to add yet more depth and appeal to its existing product line.

“The iPod and iPhone have made it possible for each of us to have a portable and personal music-listening experience,” outlined Junien Labrousse, executive vice president of Logitech’s Products Group. “But for a truly immersive listening experience, you need an earphone with a comfortable fit that keeps out the background noise and lets you hear music as the artists intended, which is precisely what Ultimate Ears has mastered.”

Prices associated with products built by Ultimate Ears range from a modest $40 USD through to a truly pocket-testing $1,200 USD, which applies to specific custom devices.

Subject to customary closing conditions, the deal is expected to be finalised before the close of August.
