Lost Planet 2 may reveal an alien world far removed from the inhospitable icy tundra offered up in the 2007 original, but Capcom’s incoming sequel will still involve plenty of Snow Pirates, terrifying Akrid, and explosive sci-fi action – all of which will be showcased for gamers this coming Wednesday.

While Lost Planet 2 is set to benefit from the international exposure afforded it by this week’s gamescom trade fair in Cologne, Germany, series fans unable to attend Europe’s biggest videogame event will be granted playable access to a multiplayer demo for the game on August 19.

The Xbox Live demo, previously rolled out to press at E3 and Comic-Con, will focus on several players working together to successfully defeat a gigantic G-Type Salamander – a particularly vicious Akrid boss beastie with a seemingly a ravenous desire to convert the attacking four-player team into vital nutrients.

Beyond the thrill of attacking as a team, the demo will allow players to experience a selection of new weapons, take some new Vital Suit robotic combat units for a spin, and work cooperatively by healing one another in order to maintain an effective battle front.

According to Capcom, Xbox Live Gold account holders will receive the demo on August 19, with Silver account holders able to sample the download a week later on Wednesday, August 26.

At time of press, Capcom had not confirmed a download date for the demo through Sony’s PlayStation Network (PSN). The full retail version of Lost Planet 2 is presently heading for a release on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 during the early part of 2010.
