M86 Security snatches up Finjan in undisclosed deal

by Steve Ragan - Nov 3 2009, 15:58

M86 Security, previously known as Marshal8e6 after a 2008 merger of 8e6 Technologies and Marshal, has acquired security vendor Finjan in a deal that is mostly undisclosed. This recent merger will combine all of Finjan’s gateway and SaaS-based solutions into M86’s line of Web and Email protection offerings.

At the time the deal was announced, the overall purchase price and source of funding was not released. However, while the details are mostly in the dark, M86 has had a busy year. In April the company acquired Avinti, who offered behavior-based Malware detection technology. The Avinti deal, also undisclosed, merged all the behavioral technologies into M86’s line. Later, Marshal8e6 changed their name and brand to M86. Tuesday’s announcement marks the second acquisition in six months for the growing security firm.

"We are very pleased to add Finjan's technology, products, customers and employees to the M86 team," said John Vigouroux, chief executive officer at M86 Security.

Under the terms of the agreement, M86 acquires Finjan's global operations, products, and technology. All of this will merge into M86 Security effective immediately. The company will maintain a development center and operations in Netanya, Israel.

M86 said they will also merge Finjan's security labs and Malicious Code Research Center into M86 Security Labs, increasing the size of M86 Web and Email-based threat research. Lastly, as part of the agreement, M86 Security acquires a license to Finjan's patents.

As mentioned, the exact financial details were not disclosed, including what if any compensation was or would be given to Microsoft who is a minor investor in Finjan.
