What's this? A Netbook with ideas above its station? Image: MSI.

Budget-priced Netbook computers are supposed to be underpowered pseudo-notebooks good for little more than casual Web browsing. Someone should send that memo to MSI, because its new Wind U135DX is clearly attempting to push beyond established expectations.

Granted, the 10-inch U135DX may look like any other Netbook, but it includes MSI’s TDE turbo drive technology, which has been added to provide users with a mobile computing experience that offers overclocked performance alongside Netbook staples such as lightweight portability and energy efficiency.

Look elsewhere on the U135DX and you’ll find a 160GB hard drive, Windows 7 Starter, and Intel’s latest 1.66GHz Atom processor (the N455), which supports up to 2GBs of DDR3 memory (667) and is capable of “enhancing overall performance by 10 percent and extending battery life by 15 percent.”

Other features and functions include the NM10 chipset, GMA3150 graphics, a 10-inch WSVGA LED-backlit display (1024 x 600), WiFi connectivity (802.11b/g/n), Bluetooth v2.1 +EDR, a built-in Webcam, a four-in-one card reader, and up to seven hours of battery power.

MSI has not yet issued regional price points or release dates for its Wind U135DX – although indications suggest an August arrival and a price of around $300 USD.
