With the athletic dual-core Tegra 2 processor looking set to become platform of choice within tablet computers and smartphone handsets, manufacturer NVIDIA is thought to be on the cusp of launching its successor.

According to a Softpedia report on the matter, the aptly named Tegra 3 will push the boundaries of mobile computing yet further thanks to its reliance on quad-core architecture.

Although some may assume the Tegra 3 could be a drain on battery life, the processor’s extra muscle is actually expected to improve operational longevity as it will tackle current single-core tasks without breaking a sweat.

Rumors suggest the new system-on-a-chip will consist of an ARM-based Cortex A9 running in conjunction with an integrated NVIDIA GeForce graphics processor.

Upcoming devices expected to firmly establish the current Tegra 2 include Motorola’s promising Xoom tablet computer and LG’s Optimus 2x smartphone.

The NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor is likely to make its full industry debut during next month’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
