It’s another sad day for the world of technology today, following news that Micron chairman and chief executive Steve Appleton has died in a plane crash.

The crash happened at Boise airport in Idaho, while Appleton—a qualified and experienced stunt plane pilot—was at the controls of an experimental fixed-wing aircraft.

According to witness reports received by Ada County dispatch, the stricken single-engine prop was seen on fire as 51-year-old Appleton struggled to bring it on approach to the airport.

Micron Technology Inc., which serves as one of the industry’s leading manufacturers of semi-conductors and flash memory solutions, confirmed Appleton’s death and said his influence would be greatly missed.

“Steve’s passion and energy left an indelible mark on Micron, the Idaho community, and the technology industry at large,” its board of directors offered in an official statement.

Appleton, who miraculously survived a plane crash in 2004, was scheduled to host an analyst conference on Feb. 10, during which he was expected to detail Micron’s roadmap for the future.
