Following on from Intel Corp’s recently unveiled SSD 310 storage solutions, Micron Technology has rolled out a new line of solid-state drives (SSDs) that offer spacious data capacities at affordable prices—again proving that SSD can be accessible on both fronts when compared with hard-disk drives (HDDs).

Created by Micron for the “new breed of notebooks” entering the electronics market, its latest line of RealSSD C400 devices have been designed to complement the lightweight construction, snappier system responsiveness and longer-lasting batteries of their host systems.

Built on 25nm NAND flash technology, the new RealSSDs offer a range of storage sizes—between a modest 64GBs to an impressive 512GBs—and will be available in 1.8-inch and 2.5-inch form factors.

In terms of read speed, Micron’s latest pushes 415Mb/s, which is a 17 percent improvement over its C300 predecessor. Write speeds vary by capacity, with the 512GB model offering 260Mb/s and a 20 percent improvement over the fastest C300 drive.

Other contributing factors include support for fast boot times and quicker application loading via the SATA 6Bb/s interface, along with low power consumption, lightweight build quality and resistance to shock and vibration.

The 512GB version of the drive is expected to sell to Micron partners for around $800 USD per 1,000 units. The 256GB drive will sell for $425 USD, the 128GB for $210 USD, and the 64GB drive for around $100 USD.

According to Micron, the RealSSD C400 will shift into mass production in February.
