With Microsoft’s focus in the videogame arena firmly centred on its Xbox 360 platform, the Redmond-based software giant has announced it will soon withdraw online support for its ageing 2001 Xbox console.
Confirming Microsoft’s decision via the company’s Gamerscore blog, Xbox Live general manager Marc Whitten said online access through the original Xbox platform will be officially discontinued this coming April 15.
Whitten also added that removal of online support will also cover Xbox games playable on the Xbox 360 platform, along with all titles existing beneath the Xbox Originals banner.
“This isn’t a decision we made lightly,” outlined Whitten. “But, after careful consideration, it is clear that this will provide the greatest benefit to the Xbox Live community”
“We will contact the Xbox Live members directly impacted by this change and if this includes you, I encourage you to check your Live messages and associated e-mail account over the coming weeks for more details and opportunities,” he went on to explain. “We view you as a partner in this process.”
In terms of offering an explanation for the impending bout of plug-pulling, Whitten said Microsoft’s planned evolution of the Xbox Live service demands that it make changes to the service that are incompatible with original Xbox game releases.
The Xbox Live service presently boasts a community of around 23 million, the majority of which access its online features through the more capable and multimedia-friendly Xbox 360.
