Microsoft somewhat addresses BSoD issue with MS10-015
by Steve Ragan - Feb 12 2010, 16:22Microsoft has acknowledged that there are some issues with one of the patches released this month, leading some Enterprise and home users to experience the famed Blue Screen of Death, and a looping restart.
“Our initial analysis suggests that the issue occurs after installing MS10-015 (KB977165). However, we have not confirmed that the issue is specific to MS10-015 or if it is an interoperability problem with another component or third-party software. Our teams are working to resolve this as quickly as possible,” Jerry Bryant, Microsoft’s Sr. Security Communications Manager Lead, wrote on the MSRC blog.
Because of the issues, Microsoft has stopped pushing MS10-015 through Windows Update. However, the halt only affects home users. Enterprise users can get MS10-015 through normal channels, such as WSUS or SMS.
MS10-015 addresses two vulnerabilities in Windows that if exploited, will lead to privilege escalation. “To exploit either vulnerability, an attacker must have valid logon credentials and be able to log on locally. The vulnerabilities could not be exploited remotely or by anonymous users,” Microsoft notes. The update is rated Important for all supported editions of Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, and Windows 7 for 32-bit Systems.
In the meantime, if users skip the patch, Microsoft has released a Fix It workaround. Using this will help mitigate the problem, so if you need it, you can get it here.
