Some classic SNES love coming to 3DS owners? Image: Nintendo.

While many 3DS owners are currently decrying an apparent lack of software content—original or otherwise—it would appear Nintendo is mulling over the possibility of porting yet another Legend of Zelda classic to help boost the stereoscopic console’s appeal.

Speaking with UK broadsheet The Guardian, legendary Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto (Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros.) has indicated that the hotly anticipated June release of Ocarina of Time 3D could lead to the porting of A Link to the Past.

“We would like to create more new titles,” offered Miyamoto. “For example, this year we are making Super Mario 3D, but it’s not really a remake of [the Wii’s Super Mario] Galaxy.”

“The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past could be one of them. I think it would be good to see that world with a layered 3D effect,” he teased.

According to Nintendo, its decision to bring existing Legend of Zelda titles to the 3DS was driven by a belief that the added depth of 3D visuals, motion-sensing gyro sensor, and touch-screen functionality can provide more immersion for players.

We’d expect to see A Link to the Past land on Nintendo’s latest portable platform if Ocarina of Time suitably lights up retail checkouts.

And, let’s face it, the vast majority of 3DS owners will be flocking to meet Link’s reinvention and the game could emerge as a much-needed system seller.
