Activision Blizzard’s hugely anticipated all-action sequel Modern Warfare 2 inspired record-breaking sales in the UK during the game’s first 24 hours of availability, according to figures released by the ELSPA.

That initial rush, which saw some 1.2 million units flying off store shelves across the United Kingdom, was evidently a mere drop in the ocean given the game’s ongoing retail performance.

Specifically, leading third-party publisher Activision Blizzard has said Modern Warfare 2’s first five days at retail have seen it racking up staggering sales of $550 million USD, which has successfully deposed the $500 million USD amassed by previous five-day record holder Grand Theft Auto IV.

While it remains to be seen how many actual units were snapped up in the game’s opening week, Activision Blizzard has said the first-day furore in the UK was more than matched in the United States, where the game shifted some 3.5 million copies for a combined 4.7 million.

Following Activision Blizzard’s pre-release build up, where it labelled Modern Warfare 2 as ‘the biggest videogame launch in history’ industry analysts have predicted the game will sell between 11 million and 13 million copies before the close of 2009.
