Pushing hard to secure exclusive videogame content for its PlayStation 3 home console, Sony has convinced Electronic Arts (EA) to grant it a timed exclusive connected to the eagerly anticipated release of Battlefield 3.
Although the exclusivity does not cover the entire game, PlayStation 3 owners can look forward to enjoying Battlefield 3’s multiplayer expansions a full week before those armed with the Xbox 360 version.
The deal is set to come into action before the close of 2011 and will launch with the ‘Back to Karland’ pack, which includes four existing Battlefield 2 maps rebuilt via DICE’s improved Frostbite 2.0 engine.
PlayStation 3 gamers with an eye on buying Battlefield 3 should note that expansion exclusivity will be made available for free on the game’s initial print run.
In the meantime, anyone looking to sample Battlefield 3’s delights ahead of its retail arrival can do so when the multiplayer beta officially opens on Sept. 29 (for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Games for Windows). The finished game is expected on October 25.
Earlier this week Sony and Ubisoft announced a partnership that will see the original award-winning Assassin’s Creed bundled with the PlayStation 3 version of upcoming adventure sequel Assassin’s Creed: Revelations.
