If you’re looking to wow friends and family with a sassy new smartphone but perhaps don’t want to splash out too heavily in the process, then news that Motorola is offering up its Backflip for just $99 USD may send you into a flurry of consumer somersaults.

Available in the U.S. through the official AT&T website, the Backflip’s tantalising price tag comes attached to a $100 USD mail-in rebate and an agreed two-year service contract, which secures the buyer a feature-rich handset also capable of flipping back on itself to better host its content.

In terms of specifications, the Motorola Backflip comes equipped with a spacious 3.1-inch HVGA display, a touch-screen user interface, Google’s Android mobile operating system (v1.5 upgradeable to v2.1), and data storage for up to 32GBs via microSD.

“With the ability to ride on our newest and fastest 3G network, access to more than 20,000 AT&T Wi-FI hotspots, and ability to talk and surf at the same time, Backflip boasts a better Android experience,” trumpeted David Christopher, chief marketing officer at AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets.

Other features include a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a solid 5.0 mega-pixel camera, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, social network synching through MOTOBLUR, on-board GPS navigation, a full HTML browser, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
