The Tech Herald’s resident reviewer, Steve Ragan, this week labelled the Motorola Droid X something of a ‘big’ hit in the world of smartphones – and it seems the gadget-buying public across the continental United States agree with that appraisal.
Moreover, American handset maker Motorola and regional operator Verizon are on the back foot after massive retail demand for the new Android-powered Droid X has seen the device selling out almost as quickly as it hits store shelves.
“This has been a very good day one for Droid X sales,” commented carrier Verizon Wireless regarding the handset’s instant appeal. “Customers were in line at midnight in some markets, in other place there were lines when the stores opened and in other stores there has been a steady stream of customers.”
According to Verizon, while it has strived to maintain pace with early demand for the Droid X, “in some parts of the country inventory is either low or out,” and, as a result, customers placing orders shouldn’t expect them to be shipped until July 23.
Arriving as a genuine contender to the smartphone crown presently slipping from Apple’s iPhone (if recent customer complaints are anything to go by), the Droid X comes equipped with a 4.3-inch display, a 1GHz processor, 8GBs of internal data storage, an included 16GB microSD card, an 8.0 mega-pixel camera, 720p HD video recording, and support for 3G Hotspot connectivity.
The Motorola Droid X from Verizon Wireless costs $199.99 USD and comes attached to a two-year service contract.
