Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (IE) may still hold the lion’s share of the hotly-contested browser market, but Mozilla Corp. is keen to make it clear that newly released Firefox 3.6 is “the world’s best web browser.”
Officially let loose on January 21, Firefox 3.6 is described by Mozilla’s Melissa Shapiro as being 20 percent faster than its predecessor while also delivering “a ground-breaking” Plugin adapter, better stability and improved JavaScript performance.
Other contributing aspects include support for a wide variety of Web standards, auto online form completion, full screen HTML5 video, and access to more than 6,000 free add-ons (such as Personas) for a wealth of personal customisation options.
In terms of developer-based additions, Firefox 3.6 includes support for the latest HTML5 specification (including FileAPI for local file handling), font support for OpenType, TrueType and Open Font Format (WOFF), both linear and radial CSS gradients, and device orientation that exposes the orientation of the connected system to Web pages.
Existing as an increasingly popular alternative to Microsoft’s bundled-as-standard browsing platform, Firefox presently runs second to Internet Explorer in terms of market share and boasts more than 350 million users worldwide.
