When it comes to today’s entertainment giants, Apple iTunes dominates the music space, Nintendo dominates the gaming space, and it’s now safe to say that Netflix dominates where VoD (Video on Demand) movie streaming is concerned.
More pointedly, fresh data offered up by the number crunchers at research specialist NPD Group has revealed that 61 percent of all movies downloaded in the United States during the month of January came from Netflix.
By way of comparison, rival VoD service provider Comcast was left languishing some way behind with a mere eight percent share during January, while DirecTV, Warner Cable and Apple iTunes all mustered just four percent each.
Boasting some 20 million subscribers, two thirds of which have aligned with the platform’s monthly $7.99 USD unlimited streaming service, Netflix is also becoming something of an Internet force in its own right.
Specifically, an October 2010 networking report found that Netflix has previously racked up a whopping 20 percent of all Web traffic in the U.S. during peak-time evening usage.
Furthermore, some 3.08 million of those subscribers signed on to the service during the last quarter.
According to NPD entertainment industry analyst Russ Crupnick, the majority of digital movie watchers do not believe physical discs are a thing of the past, but are drawn to digital transactions due to “the immediate access and ease of acquisition” users enjoy when streaming and downloading via services such as Netflix.
