If you’re looking to kill two gift birds with one retail stone as the holiday festivities close in, you may want to consider investing in Sony’s new Bravia TV (model: KDL-22PX300), which comes equipped with a built-in PlayStation 2 (PS2) home console and a single game controller.
Available through RicherSounds for a bargain price of 199.95 GBP, the latest HD Ready Bravia offers up a 22-inch LCD screen (1366 x 768), four HDMI ports, a trio of USB sockets, two Ethernet ports, and support for Freeview.
Thanks to the PS2’s inclusion, the TV also boasts on-board support for DVD and CD playback. That being said, we have to mention that the standalone PS2 wasn’t exactly known for its stellar DVD hardware.
Other attributes packed into the Bravia include the Bravia Engine 3, Bravia Internet Video (for YouTube, Lovefilm and others), MPEG noise reduction, a 3D comb filter, and Dynamic Contrast.
While we here at Tech Herald Towers can certainly see Sony shifting a few of these swanky Bravias because of the built-in gaming hardware, we can’t help but feel the Japanese electronics giant has missed a trick.
Specifically, the PlayStation 2—although not defunct—is already 10 years old and much of Sony’s gaming community has already moved on to the powerhouse PlayStation 3.
Putting that into context, would you be joyously swinging from the retail rafters if Dell suddenly released a line of computer monitors with built-in floppy disk drives?
There may well be people still using the PlayStation 2 (or floppy disk drives), but the tech is outdated and has been clearly superseded by a far superior iterative upgrade.
Hey, Sony… Pack a PlayStation 3 into a sexy HDTV and watch them fly off store shelves amid the Christmas rush.
Bah, humbug!
