Cool. But will it sway people from free online news? Image: News Corp/Apple.
With a potential readership of around 15 million to aim at, media mogul Rupert Murdoch has today launched ‘The Daily’ a digital newspaper published exclusively through the iPad tablet computer.
Created by Murdoch’s News Corp., The Daily is initially being offered up via a two-week trial, but will cost $0.99 USD for a week’s access or $39.99 USD for a full year thereafter.
“Our aim is for the Daily to be the indispensable source for news, information and entertainment,” enthused Murdoch during the publication’s official launch.
Taking advantage of the iPad’s full-colour graphics capabilities—and looking more like a glossy magazine than a mere newspaper—The Daily will offer up to 100 pages of content bolstered by updates where necessary throughout each day.
In an effort to increase the publication’s circulation, The Daily will also allow readers to share individual story links via email and social networks such as Twitter and Facebook.
Other contributing aspects packed into The Daily include support for HTML5 pages, outward Web linking, 360-degree graphics, interactive charts, instant access to the Apple App Store, and daily sudoku and crossword puzzles.
“We can and must make the business of news gathering and editing viable again,” added Murdoch. “We’re entering a remarkable age of innovation and digital renaissance.”
