The iPad is probably the current definition of ‘cool’ in the world of gadgetry. But, while there’s no doubting the appeal of Apple’s touch-screen wonder, shoemaker Nike has just announced a genuine slice of retro cool that arrives as yesterday’s future today.
More pointedly, fans of Hollywood’s hugely popular ‘Back to the Future’ films can now secure themselves the very same high-top Air Mag boots worn by actor Michael J. Fox in the role of heroic series protagonist Marty McFly.
Officially unveiled by Nike in Los Angeles on Thursday and clearly created to tap into the appeal of limited edition footwear, only 1,500 pairs of the Air Mag boots are being made available at a rate of 150 pairs per day for the next ten days.
“You are looking at the rarest of Nike footwear,” the Nikemag.ebay bidding page outlines. “For 22 years they have existed only in the year 2015 on Marty McFly’s feet. Today they are finally a reality.”
Current (frankly ridiculous) bidding prices of up to $5,500 USD would suggest the futuristic footwear comes packed with advanced technology to help wow fellow members of the great unwashed.
Sadly, that isn’t the case. The Air Mag boots are just a novelty purchase with an extremely unusual design. And no, they don’t even “power-lace” themselves like in the movie.
That being said, Nike is certainly doing its utmost to ramp up interest in its flashy movie reproductions, which are made from unspecified “space-age materials”. They also boast an electro-luminescent outsole, a glowing LED Nike logo, light modules in each heel, and a rechargeable internal battery pushing 3,000 hours of operation.
Bidders eager to throw exorbitant amounts of money in Nike’s direction can at least hold their heads high in the knowledge that their cash is going to a good cause—namely because all proceeds from Air Mag sales are to be donated to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
