Evidently Nintendo’s recent decision to hack down the price of its 3DS portable console is paying dividends. Moreover, the Japanese gaming giant has this week revealed a dramatic uptake of sales for the glasses-free device.

With the 3DS currently priced at around $170 USD—a sizeable drop compared to March’s launch price of $250 USD—Nintendo is reporting that sales for the month of August have rocketed by some 260 percent in the United States alone.

That percentage performance figure equates to unit sales in excess of 235,000, which resulted in the autostereoscopic 3DS finishing the month in second place on the computer and videogame hardware chart.

“Consumers are responding very positively to the new suggested retail price of $169.99 for the Nintendo 3DS,” commented Scott Moffitt, vice president of sales and marketing at Nintendo of America (NoA).

Taking a closer look at August’s sudden but unsurprising burst of sales traction, market experts at NPD Group have revealed that Nintendo shifted around 185,000 units of the 3DS following the sweeping price reductions introduced on August 12.

Nintendo also believes consumer interest will remain focused on the 3DS as the platform prepares to welcome a selection of major first-party software titles before the close of 2011.

These frontline games include the likes of Star Fox 64 3D (available now), Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7.
