Continuing today’s focus on gaming news – for there’s a lot of it about at present – Japanese gaming legend Nintendo has this week revealed the cream of the crop with regard to Wii videogame releases set to impact the Christmas period.
With the holiday season traditionally seen as providing the likes of Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft with ample opportunity to further bulge their respective coffers, Nintendo is hoping to close 2009 with a definite bang thanks to what it believes is its best Wii line-up yet.
Specifically, Nintendo claims the coveted Christmas number-one spot could well be secured by Wii Sports Resort (the already well-received sequel to Wii Sports), which, beyond being available as a standalone retail purchase, also comes bundled alongside the standard Wii console.
Providing a sizeable amount of momentum for Nintendo’s festive push, the gaming heavyweight is also placing significant belief in Wii Fit Plus, which is the sequel to Wii Fit – last year’s hugely popular entertainment hybrid of gaming and exercise.
With Wii Fit Plus and Wii Sports Resort sitting firmly as the spearhead of Nintendo’s push for Christmas domination, the company’s holiday charge is bolstered by the inclusion of New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which is a revamped home-console iteration of an established Nintendo DS action platformer.
“We think this is the strongest festive line-up we’ve had yet on Wii,” trumpeted Nintendo senior product manager Rob Lowe in an MCV report. “We’ve got New Super Mario Bros. Wii for the families and gamers, Wii Fit Plus for the women and the older audience, and Wii Sports Resort for pretty much everybody.”
Asked whether Wii Sports Resort has a realistic chance of being the Christmas number one, Lowe referred to the fun-filled sequel as “a dark horse,” and said it certainly stands a chance given that it is part of the default hardware package.
Wii Sports Resort is available now in both the U.S. and Europe. Wii Fit Plus is already available in the U.S. and will hit stores in Europe on October 30. New Super Mario Bros. Wii will arrive in the U.S. on November 15 and Europe on November 20.
