Nintendo's new portable... here it is! Hey, wait a minute. wwarby/Flickr.
Despite having already cornered the portable gaming market with three versions of its massively popular DS videogame console (DS, DS Lite, DSi), a new wave of gadget-based speculation suggests Japanese entertainment giant Nintendo is currently hard at work developing the little dual-screen wonder’s replacement.
According to the initial rumour published over at Develop, conveniently unnamed “inside sources” have revealed that a brand new Nintendo portable system is being prepared for retail launch in time for a Christmas 2010 release.
And, adding further appeal to any resulting advancement upon the already market-leading DS console, the report’s sources also intimated that the new handheld will be powered by none other than NVIDIA’s new TEGRA system-on-a-chip, which includes an ARM-based processor and integrated GeForce graphics.
Sadly however, before expectant Nintendo fans start gleefully bouncing off the walls at the prospect of yet more portable gaming glory – and perhaps a device more capable in terms of core specification – Nintendo has been quick to quash mounting whispers.
Contacted directly by the industry watchers at Computer and Video Games (CVG), a Nintendo spokesperson has said the Christmas 2010 arrival of any such portable platform is nothing more than “rumour and speculation.”
Given the notoriously unreliable statements of denial released by the gaming industry’s three main players (particularly Sony), we confidently expect to be holding a brand new Nintendo portable at some point in the next 12 months.
