The speeding Nintendo Wii price reduction rumour train rumbles on today following an eyebrow-raising retail memo unearthed by the diligent folk over at prominent technology blog Engadget.
Specifically, mounting speculation suggesting Nintendo is on the verge of officially announcing a $50 USD price drop to its hugely popular home console has received something of a credibility boost, courtesy of a leaked internal memo that supposedly emanates from Best Buy.
Provided by an anonymous “Best Buy tipster” the retail memo reveals that Nintendo will make a formal announcement regarding the much talked about Wii price drop this coming Friday (September 25), with the $50 USD reduction coming into effect on Sunday, September 27.

If the memo is authentic, and not just a hastily typed slice of rumour-churning deceit, then the Nintendo Wii motion-sensing console will be selling for $199.99 USD in a matter of days – keeping the platform competitively priced following significant dollar reductions to both the Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3.
In related news, Microsoft is looking to increase temptation for prospective console buyers by lopping another $50 USD from its 120GB Xbox 360 Elite platform, which was recently dropped from $399 USD to $299 USD.
The limited time price drop extension, which is a substantial incentive and potentially a cracking business move, will give buyers a further $50 USD off providing they deliver proof of purchase via a simple mail-in rebate process.
It’s also worth noting that, while the offer officially closes on October 05, Microsoft will still accept applications on any rebate claims postmarked by November 20.
