Nintendo ups Wii cool factor with black controllers

While we’ll freely admit colourful controllers absolutely won’t enhance the enjoyment levels of Wii owners as they swing, punch and waggle their groundbreaking motion-sensing accessories – there’s simply no doubting the enhanced cool factor that generally accompanies such aesthetic tweaking.

Marking something of a radical departure from the clean white Wii Remote that has long-since partnered the similarly white Wii home console and Nunchuk controller, Japanese gaming titan Nintendo has finally added a sexy black Wii Remote to its official line-up of peripherals.

Much in the same way the black GameCube adding a certain appeal beyond the default (and hideous) purple console offered up by Nintendo during the last hardware generation, the new black Remote (which is already available in Japan) not only brings a little $50 USD zest to the Wii but also comes complete with a black Wii MotionPlus dongle.

“The Wii Remote revolutionized not only how people play games, but also who plays them,” enthused Cammie Dunaway, executive vice president of Sales & Marketing at Nintendo of America (NoA).

“The new color lets people customize their setup, and the controllers make great stocking stuffers for players of any age,” she added.

Given that the Wii Remote is only one half of Nintendo’s acclaimed Wii control scheme, it’s no surprise to note that NoA is also introducing a black version of the Wii Nunchuk, which will retail for around $20 USD.

Can we expect a black Wii console to follow? The insatiable Sith Lord residing within us certainly hopes so.

The black Wii Remote/Wii MotionPlus and Wii Nunchuk controllers will reportedly start flying from retail shelves this coming November 16.
