No free iPod Touch for Mac students in 2011

Well, it is still a good offer we suppose. Just without the glitz. Image: Apple.

Seriously, Steve, if Apple is cash-strapped right now, why not think about buying a few less black sweaters or putting up the price of the iPad—anything but taking it out on the kids.

Moreover, Apple has this week announced its annual ‘back-to-school’ promotional drive, and it’s somewhat stingier than we’ve grown accustomed to in recent years.

Apple’s incentivised focus for 2011 sees it offering students a dull $100 USD voucher for use in the Mac App Store, iBookstore, iTunes and App Store in return for them splashing out on a Mac computer.

By way of comparison, last year saw everyone’s favourite gadget giant handing out free iPod Touch handsets (post-rebate) to all those willing to purchase a Mac. Now that’s what we call an effective incentive.

You wouldn’t say times are hard at Apple right now, not with the ongoing success of the iPad and iPhone, but maybe Jobs & Co. need to cut back on their generosity in order to pay for that gargantuan white mothership they plan on erecting in Cupertino.
