With director J. J. Abrams preparing to unleash his big-screen Star Trek reboot upon science fiction fans everywhere this coming May 08, mobile phone behemoth Nokia Corp. is looking to get in on the imminent geek-fuelled outpouring with its exclusive special edition ‘Star Trek’ 5800 XpressMusic handset.

While it sadly doesn’t come with an iconic flip lid reliant on enthusiastic wrist action, and probably won’t respond to pleas to for the Enterprise transporter room to ‘beam up’ its owner, the Star Trek edition 5800 will, of course, be packed with all the usual movie tie-in guff that so often accompanies such branded gadgets.

Specifically, prospective owners can expect to receive a host of Star Trek themed wallpapers, screensavers and a total of eight separate ring tones – although it remains to be seen if those tones will contain iconic bridge sound effects, the swishing of doors, or Scotty’s emotional bagpipe rendition of Amazing Grace from the final scene of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

Ah, our veil of quiet respectability has evidently slipped a little.

Faithful franchise fans can at least look forward to the inclusion of a fun ‘Phaser’ sound application that will enable them to aim their handsets at each other and slip into the outer reaches of their imaginations – while subconsciously wondering whether the gimmick value is really worth their dignity.

Actually, not that we know anything about this kind of stuff, but the Phaser application can also be downloaded through the App Store on Apple’s popular iTunes.

Available in red, blue or a combination of black and silver, the Star Trek edition 5800 also comes with a 3.2-inch touch-screen display, a 3.2 mega pixel camera, onboard GPS functionality, and fold out port and starboard warp nacelles… We may have made up that last bit.

European lovers of all things Star Trek can pick up Nokia’s latest special edition from May 01 through O2, T-Mobile and Vodafone – the phone comes free when signing to a mandatory service contract.
