Last week both Samsung and Sony Ericsson revealed their initial smartphone line-ups that are due to receive the Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) upgrade of Google’s Android operating system. Industry rival LG is now following suit.
Using its official Facebook page to break the news, South Korean electronics manufacturer LG has confirmed that version 4.0 of Android will indeed be coming to devices such as the Optimus LTE, Optimus Black (Nitro HD/Marquee), Prada 3.0, and Optimus 3D.
Unfortunately for existing owners of the above LG-branded smartphones, the ICS upgrade won’t be available until Q2 and Q3 of 2012. Samsung and Sony Ericsson customers, by way of comparison, should have access to it during Q1.
The first wave of updates will arrive in Q2 for the Optimus LTE, the Prada 3.0, the Optimus 2X, Optimus Sol, myTouch Q and Eclipse. The Q3 release will cover the Optimus 3D, Optimus Black, Optimus Big, Optimus Q2 and Optimus EX.
Given the lengthy wait some LG owners now face, it’s likely that their handsets will be teetering on obsolete and will have been superceded by a variety of other handset alternatives by the time ICS arrives—which may make a hardware upgrade more favorable.
