As PlayStation 3 (PS3) users over the pond prepare to finally embrace streamed movies via the upcoming LoveFilm application, Netflix is working to enhance its established PS3 streaming service in the United States.
Firstly, the Blu-ray transition disc PlayStation 3 users have been forced to use in order to access the Netflix 'Watch Instantly' service will no longer be required thanks to an upcoming firmware download Sony will release on October 18.
And, not just introducing improved user convenience for console-equipped Netflix subscribers, the download will also deliver an overhauled graphical user interface (GUI) that's been optimised specially for the PS3 gamepad's twin analogue joysticks.
Likely to arrive as something of a slap in the face for Xbox 360 owners who also use Netflix via Microsoft's console, the PS3-based version of the service will also enable the streaming of HD movies in a resolution of 1080p along with Dolby 5.1 stereo surround sound.
Presently, Xbox 360 users don't have access to either of the above experience-improving aspects, and also still need to use a DVD disc before accessing 'Watch Instantly' content.
LoveFilm will be arriving on PS3s in the United Kingdom this coming November.
