When Sony first revealed its plans to replace the ageing PlayStation Portable (PSP) with the cutting-edge PlayStation Vita, some within the industry labeled it as the PlayStation 3 Mini.

How we scoffed at the very idea that Sony’s home console titles would ever be hosted on a portable videogame platform. Oh, is that a tasty slice of humble pie we see before us?

More pointedly, EuroGamer has this week reported that a future PlayStation firmware upgrade will enable PS3 games to be streamed directly for play via the Vita.

Unsurprisingly, resolution will likely suffer, with the Vita set to run PS3 content at 480x272—but that is expected to shift to 480p once software developers have created a Vita-specific resolution mode.

Word of the Vita’s elevated status as a genuine PlayStation 3 Mini comes after Sony recently teased crowds at the Tokyo Game Show (TGS) by running an adjusted version of Killzone 3 on the handheld.

The PlayStation Vita launches in Japan this coming December 17. It is expected to arrive in North America and Europe on February 22 of 2012.
