Prominent CPU manufacturer Qualcomm has this week said it intends to debut two significantly more capable Snapdragon processors for smartphone devices during 2011, stretching current performance boundaries from 1GHz to 1.2GHz and then up again to 1.5GHz.
According to Qualcomm, the new dual core 1.2GHz chip (MSM8x60 – Adreno 220 – 1280x800) is available now to customers and will begin appearing in devices during the first quarter of next year.
This will be followed by an even more capable dual core 1.5GHz model (QSD8x72 – Adreno 220 – 1440x900), which will ship in the second half of the year.
“We are accelerating video in hardware with a dedicated video core that can make a crisp, clear picture,” outlined Qualcomm product manager Aytac Biber in a statement.
“We can offload the burden of these operations from the general purpose CPU so that it can take care of the household tasks,” he added.
While the improved Snapdragon platforms should certainly improve functionality on handheld devices, they may ultimately be overshadowed by the ARM Cortex-A15.
Unveiled earlier this week, the Cortex-A15 promises to deliver a whopping 2.5GHz of mobile oomph for smartphone devices and tablet computers.
Popular handheld devices already carrying the 1GHz Snapdragon processor include the likes of Google's Android-powered Nexus One smartphone (pictured).
