With Google and Apple making leaps and strides where pleasing smartphone user interfaces (UIs) are concerned, it would appear market rival Research In Motion (RIM) is keen to give its somewhat straight-laced BlackBerry brand a fresh lick of paint.
More pointedly, the Canadian smartphone specialist has added design company The Astonishing Tribe (TAT) to its portfolio of assets, which plies its trade by crafting UIs for mobile phone handsets and tablet computers.
“We’re excited that the TAT team will be joining RIM and bringing their talent to the BlackBerry PlayBook and smartphone platforms,” enthused RIM in an official statement.
“TAT is renowned for their innovative mobile user interface (UI) designs and has a long history of working with mobile and embedded technology [focusing] on delivering great user experiences,” it added.
According to industry analyst Jeffries, the integration of TAT is likely to see the recently released BlackBerry 6.0 operating system infused with 3D user-centric attributes more closely aligned with those on the iPhone and Android-powered devices.
The acquisition of The Astonishing Tribe follows on from RIM’s purchase of QNX Software Systems and its QNX operating platform, which is expected to power the upcoming PlayBook tablet.
Financial details regarding the deal have not been disclosed by either party.
