RIM confirms BlackBerry App World

Front-running smartphone manufacturer Research In Motion (RIM) has this week announced the official name of its upcoming BlackBerry software application store, which will be known as ‘BlackBerry App World’.

Following the lead of Apple’s hugely popular App Store and similar handset software services offered by the likes of Nokia’s Ovi platform, Ontario-based RIM has said its new download store will give BlackBerry smartphone owners access to “tons of great applications,” which will all be available for easy shopping “in one convenient place.”

Although the store is not yet finished and ready for complete consumer access, a new Web page designed to drum up interest in BlackBerry App World has been posted to the official BlackBerry site.

While scant on feature details, the page does outline that those looking to purchase content from the store will need a PayPal account, which is also a prerequisite for anyone that wants to download the BlackBerry App World storefront to their phones.

A separate ‘sign-up’ Web link on the page allows expectant BlackBerrry users to register their interest and receive launch notification when the store’s virtual doors are eventually thrown open for business.

Another link encourages software developers to submit applications for consideration to the store.

The BlackBerry App World will initially be rolled out in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. Other versions in French, Germany, Italian and Spanish will follow.
