After carving out a genre niche all of its own with 2005’s compelling World War II action epic Sniper Elite, UK developer Rebellion has announced plans to bring its third-person ‘long-range shooter’ to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

“It’s fantastic for us to be involved in the world of Sniper Elite again,” enthused Rebellion founder Chris Kingsley in a statement. “We look forward to winning even more awards with Sniper Elite V2 and wowing consumers with what will be a great game.”

The original Sniper Elite revolved around OSS agent Karl Fairburne, who, disguised as a German sniper, was inserted into the heart of Berlin during the final days of the Second World War with a view to obtaining critical nuclear technology ahead of agents from the Soviet Union.

Although very little is presently known about the new Sniper Elite experience, we find ourselves pondering whether “V2” is merely a generic soon-to-be-replaced ‘Version 2’ extension to the original game’s title, or perhaps eludes to Nazi Germany’s plans for terrorizing the Allies with its infamous V2 rockets. Hmm.

Sniper Elite V2 will be published by 505 Games and is expected to be camping in clock towers before the close of 2012.

And, if you’re keen to assess Rebellion’s pedigree, it’s responsible for games such as Aliens vs. Predator, Rogue Trooper, Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron, Dead to Rights: Reckoning and… um… Shellshock 2: Blood Trails.

Sniper Elite won ‘BestPC/Console Game’ at the 2005 TIGA Awards.
