Grr... but we'll take it in black, please. Image: Renault.
The truly terrifying Renault 5 GT Turbo notwithstanding, you perhaps wouldn’t peg French automobile maker Renault as a frontrunner when it comes to creating grunt-worthy versions of ordinary road cars.
Whether Renault is actively looking to change that, you really have to applaud the company for its latest tyre-shredding offering, which is a distinctly muscular variant of its popular Megane.
The Megane RenaultSport 265 Trophy is described as the fastest road-going Renault to ever roll off the production line and, as such, it boasts a top-end speed of 158mhp (approx. 255mph), a 0-60mph acceleration of just six seconds (approx. 0-100kph), and a sexy 261bhp.
Other contributing aspects designed to coax performance-conscious buyers include a power-to-weight ratio of 188bhp per tonne, a maximum turbo pressure of 2.5 bar, and higher pressure and running temperatures via an enhanced air intake platform.
Choosing not to limit customer appeal to just the Megane 265 Trophy’s growling heart, Renault has also throw in 19-inch Speedline alloy wheels in gloss black with red accents, Bridgestone Potenza sports tyres (RE050A), Brembo brakes, and Recaro seats with sports detailing.
Sadly not everything about the Megane 265 Trophy is a winner—of course, we’re talking about the unattractive standard Liquid Yellow i.d. metallic point job.
But that shortfall is at least offset by an optional Black metallic paint job, along with Trophy red decals, on-board performance tracking technology, and LED daytime running lights.
And the price for this sassy little banana-hued beast? A fairly respectable 27, 820 GBP.
