Is the wait for The Fab Four finally over? Image: Apple.
There’s no denying the appeal of the iTunes Store where digital music is concerned. However, since first opening its virtual doors, Apple’s hugely popular download portal has been one band short of perfection. By the end of business today, that imperfection should hopefully have been rectified.
Moreover, the standoff between gadget giant Apple Inc. and music publisher EMI Group is expected to end on Tuesday, with the former said to be readying a formal announcement that will finally bring The Beatles back catalogue to iTunes.
Rampant rumour regarding the “exciting announcement” has sprung up since Apple posted a somewhat cryptic message on its homepage, which read: “Tomorrow is just another day. That you’ll never forget.”
Citing people familiar with the matter, The Wall Street Journal has fanned the flames of intrigue by saying a deal between Apple and EMI Group has been struck. That being said, there are other whispers circulating that suggest Apple’s announcement will not concern The Beatles at all.
For example, one such slice of speculation claims the Cupertino-based company is about to introduce a monthly iTunes subscription service to help generate more revenue from those casual multimedia consumers that currently peruse the store.
Another points to the unveiling of more layered cloud-based online services to sit alongside Apple’s existing MobileMe synchronisation platform.
So, are John, Paul, George and Ringo finally about to take centre stage on iTunes? We’ll find out at 10 a.m. Eastern time when Apple officially fills in the blanks.
