For the most part, annoyingly persistent technology rumours that refuse to go away invariably end up carrying weight. Bearing that in mind, we should probably expect Apple to unleash a snazzy new portable tablet device in the very near future.

Expected to straddle the existing notebook and Netbook hardware markets, the much talked about Apple tablet computer is, according to UK broadsheet The Financial Times (FT), heading for a retail launch this coming September.

Citing unnamed sources closely linked to the development of Apple's device, the report claims the upcoming tablet will boast 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity, a 10-inch touchscreen display, and will carry many of the same features and functions as the existing non-telephonic iPod Touch.

FT’s sources also offer that Apple is eager to drive tablet and content sales through enriched multimedia and is presently in talks with leading music publishers to sell compatible iTunes albums enhanced by exclusive video content and interactive elements such as photos, lyric sheets, and liner notes.

It is also believed Cupertino-based Apple is holding similar talks with major book publishers regarding the possibility of providing tablet users with access to a vast catalogue of electronic books -- a move that would rival dedicated eReader devices offered by the likes of Amazon and Sony.

Of course, as is Apple's way when it comes to such speculation, the gadget and computer giant is remaining tight lipped regarding the rumoured tablet. However, current reports suggest the device is likely to hit retail in the autumn and be priced anywhere between $600 USD and $1,000 USD.
