The royal household at Buckingham Palace has joined the microblogging revolution with the introduction of its very own Twitter account, but only in an indirect way.
@BritishMonarchy has been a hit since its launch last week after weeks of testing with a total of 8211 followers at time of writing. As you would expect of such an account, it specialises in providing details of news of the Royal Family.
A random selection of posts include "On 13 Jul 11:00: Changing the Guard at Buckingham Palace" followed by "Gallery: Sergeant Billy Owen at Buckingham Palace after receiving The Queens Gallantry Medal from The Prince... "
The account will be split between Buckingham Palace and that of Clarence House.
All fascinating stuff for Royal watchers of course, however disappointingly a spokeswoman for the Royal Family said that neither the Queen nor other members of the Royal Family will be tweeting personally.
"The intention," she explained to the BBC, "is that it is a news service rather than a personal voice."
Royal fans will be relieved to hear that both the Queen and the Prince of Wales had been informed of the arrival of the Royal Family into the microblogging age.
