Following whispers that suggest NVIDIA is on the verge of debuting its Tegra 3 processing platform, a leaked business roadmap for the chipmaker has revealed a 3D version of the existing Tegra 2 could also be in the offing.

Described as the “World’s First Mobile 3D Processor”, the new ARM-based Tegra 2 3D runs at 1.2GHz and will provide NVIDIA’s hardware partners with support for 3D display screens. The current dual-core Tegra 2 runs at 1GHz.

Although the roadmap doesn’t specify whether the Tegra 2 3D is aimed at devices equipped with glasses-free 3D or conventional 3D, the former seems more likely given the chip’s positioning across tablet computers and smartphone handsets.

We’re openly pouring fuel on the fire of unsubstantiated rumor at this point, but we find ourselves linking the Tegra 2 3D with LG’s upcoming G-Slate tablet, which, industry whispers suggest, will be the first tablet computer to include glasses-free 3D technology.

The Tegra 2 3D is expected to arrive during the spring, placing it tantalisingly close to the March launch date presently being attached to the G-Slate.

In related news, the new and improved Tegra 3 chipset should arrive towards the end of 2011—and will likely make a few waves when it does seeing as it’s built on four Cortex A9 cores, runs at 1.5GHz, and includes an enhanced GPU.

According to the roadmap, the tablet version of the quad-core Tegra 3 will support Blu-ray media at a resolution of 1900x1200, while the smartphone unit will be available in both dual-core and quad-core options at a resolution of 1366x768.
