Looking to increase the global saturation of its chip-making business, leading industry player Intel Corporation is rumoured to have secured a significant contract that will see it providing processing units to Finland’s Nokia Corp., the world’s biggest handset manufacturer.

According to business publication Bloomberg, “a person familiar with the matter” has intimated that the deal between Santa Clara-based Intel and Espoo-based Nokia will be officially confirmed during a conference call scheduled for later today.

The unnamed source, apparently hiding behind anonymity due to the (supposedly) confidential nature of the negotiations, said Intel senior vice president Anand Chandrasekher will be charged with breaking news of the deal.

Already boasting a formidable grip on the personal computer market, with more than 80 percent of the planet’s home hardware running on Intel platforms, an agreement to supply Nokia’s handheld devices would be something of a boon for Intel as it pursues an expansion into the increasingly profitable mobile sector.
