Will cheaper Nokia prices quash that niggling iPhone temptation? Image: Nokia.
Seemingly sick of being something of a smartphone alsoran while the likes of Apple and Samsung gallop off into the distance, mobile phone titan Nokia is reportedly planning to slash its hardware prices.
That’s according to a Reuters report that claims two industry sources have leaked news of the impending price cuts, which will apparently be rolled out across European markets.
If the information proves accurate, the sweeping adjustments will reach 15 percent on certain smartphone models, including Nokia’s flagship N8 device, the multimedia C7, and the enterprise-focused E6.
“There are no very big cuts per model, but the scale—across the portfolio—is unseen for a very, very long time,” commented one of Reuters’ sources from behind the veil of anonymity.
While more accessible retail tags on existing Nokia smartphones will be welcomed by prospective buyers, industry analysts have said the Espoo-based giant needs to apply similarly aggressive tactics to upcoming devices if it hopes to challenge smartphone rivals.
Nokia Corp., which remains the world’s largest mobile phone manufacturer despite the consumer appeal of Apple’s iPhone, has not offered any official reaction on the story.
