Rumour: PlayStation Vita set for October launch

Coming soon(er than we thought?). Image: IGN/Blockbuster.

With the Nintendo 3DS having largely failed in its attempts to set the gaming industry alight, mobile consumers may (finally) be ready for the processing power and multimedia muscle Sony's PlayStation Vita promises.

Indeed, following hot on the heels of Nintendo's recent move to bolster interest in the 3DS by hacking down hardware prices, rumours have arisen that Sony is looking to tempt floundering consumers by launching the Vita in October.

That's according to a leaked promotional Blockbuster flier, which, if authentic, indicates that both the Wi-Fi and 3G versions of the Vita will launch on October 28 attached to respective prices of $230 USD and $280 USD.

Prior to the unearthing of Blockbuster's flier, the Vita's arrival had only been vaguely outlined by Sony as 'some time in 2011'. The Japanese electronics giant has not yet offered an official comment regarding the October launch.

Clearly keen to hit the ground running with the official follow up to the original PlayStation Portable (PSP), Sony has said the majority of leading software publishers are already committed to the platform and some 80 games are currently in production.

Last week, Nintendo dropped the price of its 3DS to $170 USD. Coincidence?
