Ordinarily, if you throw $200 USD at a smartphone purchase you’ll secure a swanky cutting-edge handset, but, in doing so, you’re also likely to tie yourself to a mandatory two-year service contract. Annoying, we know.
So how about considering the new Samsung Exhibit II, which is being offered exclusively through T-Mobile USA but, and here’s the kicker, it comes without any kind of prolonged contract plan.
Set for release through Walmart and T-Mobile stores across the United States from Oct. 27 (that’s tomorrow, kids), the (entry level) Exhibit II is supported by 4G network connectivity, a spacious 3.7-inch WVGA capacitive touchscreen, a solid 1GHz Snapdragon processor, and Google’s Android operating system (version 2.3).
Other points of appeal include a (disappointing?) rear-facing 3.0 mega-pixel camera with video recording capabilities, a front-facing VGA sensor for video chats, Wi-Fi support, access to Android Market, and a host of other Google-branded services, and a calming ‘Marine Blue’ chassis color.
“The Samsung Exhibit II 4G is the perfect device for consumers desiring a smartphone with robust 4G entertainment and Web browsing experiences—at a price they can afford,” enthused Andrew Morrison, vice president of T-Mobile product management, in a statement.
Of course, if being tethered to a service contract is no great shakes, you can snap up the Exhibit II for a mere $29.99 USD, after taking advantage of a $50 USD mail-in rebate. Otherwise, contract-free freedom costs $199.99 USD.
Granted, some of the specs may not be sufficient to challenge the smartphone sector’s big boys (i.e., iPhone and Galaxy S), but capable processing, 4G connectivity, and no contract tether for less than $200 USD really is tempting.
