The iconic iPhone may still be the handset of choice for the majority of prospective buyers, but the arrival of Samsung’s Galaxy Note may yet call into question whether Apple’s device remains the most popular and the best smartphone platform.

Placing to one side Samsung’s bold claims that the Note is a smartphone with tablet features, discerning customers will decide the former and critics the latter when the Note handset officially arrives on AT&T’s network on February 19.

Available in ‘carbon blue’ or ‘ceramic white’ and attached to a price tag of $299.99 USD (with a mandatory two-year AT&T data contract), the Galaxy Note boasts a massive 5.3-inch HD Super AMOLED touchscreen (1280x800), 16GBs of data storage, and support for high-speed connectivity via 4G/LTE.

Other aspects of note (ahem) include, a swift 1.5GHz dual-core processor, an 8.0 mega-pixel camera with autofocus (rear), a 2.0 mega-pixel camera for video chats (front), video capture at 1080p (30fps), and even an on-board ‘S Pen’ stylus for increased touch-based interaction.

Although AT&T will begin taking pre-orders for the impressive Samsung Galaxy Note on February 17, we can’t help but feel the smartphone/tablet hybrid will be passed over by those awaiting the arrival of a certain iPhone 5.
