PC performance coming to smartphones in 2012? Image: Samsung.

Are you drawn towards a smartphone purchase but your interest is tempered somewhat by the still relatively modest 1GHz processing platforms most smartphones draw upon?

If so, you may not have long to wait to let relinquish the grip currently throttling temptation.

More pointedly, an unnamed source from within Samsung has apparently revealed to Daum that the Korean consumer electronics specialist plans to release a smartphone device in 2012 that’s able to compete with existing desktop computers.

“We are planning to release a 2GHz dual-core CPU-equipped smartphone by next year,” the supposedly ‘high-ranking official’ teased. “This product will have the data processing capabilities of a regular PC.”

Although said processing hardware is reportedly being developed via Samsung’s proprietary ‘Exynos’ brand, the resulting technology will be based on the same ARM technology utilized by the likes of Qualcomm, NVIDIA and Apple.

The whispers obtained by Daum also suggest Samsung might be willing to license its 2.0 GHz smartphone platform out to other hardware manufacturers—or at least those not already using such advanced engines by next year.
