Considering Sony’s clearly voiced support for the progression of 3D technology – via its line of 3D Bravia televisions, Blu-ray players and the 3D-capable PlayStation 3 – it’s perhaps not surprising to see the Japanese electronics titan unveiling a swanky new 3D notebook.

More pointedly, a concept version of the 3D VAIO portable computer has been thrust into the spotlight ahead of this week’s IFA Consumer Electronics show in Berlin. The computer will, if reports are accurate, provide 3D content at a speed of 60 frames per second, a high-definition screen resolution of 1080p and a refresh rate of 240Hz.

According to Sony, the device will enable users to switch the display between conventional 2D and 3D via a special ‘3D button’ located beneath the right screen hinge. The 3D VAIO will come complete with a pair of active-shutter 3D glasses

Speaking during Sony’s IFA press conference, company CEO Howard Stringer said a line of 3D VAIO notebooks is expected to hit the market during the spring of 2011.

Stringer also announced Sony’s plans to launch its very own 3D television channel, which will broadcast 3D content stretching from children’s programming through to documentaries and mainstream movies.

Sony also used the IFA platform to unveil its WV-90, a new 3D-capable video projector that promises to deliver a truly large-screen 3D experience by applying the same active-shutter system utilised on Sony’s 3D Bravia televisions.
