Described by its maker as the world’s fastest desktop hard drive, Seagate Technology has this week revealed it has begun shipping its latest Barracuda XT platform, which is a 3.5-inch drive offering up a whopping 2TBs (terabytes) of data storage and a performance speed of 7200RPM.
Arriving as the industry’s first 3.5-inch HDD to feature a “blazing fast” 6Gbps SATA (Serial ATA) interface, the new Barracuda XT is being aimed squarely at high-capacity users such as those working within demanding digital video environments or those working with storage-hungry desktop computing applications.
“Capacity and performance remain the defining attributes of hard drives for PC gamers, digital multimedia content developers and many other customers requiring high-end systems at home and in the office,” trumpeted Dave Mosley, executive vice president of sales and marketing at Seagate.
“Seagate is meeting these requirements with the first 7200RPM desktop hard drive to combine 2TB of storage capacity with the fastest Serial ATA to date,” he added.
In terms of its core technical aspects, the new 6Gbps Barracuda XT is a four-platter drive with an areal density of 368 Gigabits per square inch – it is also backward compatible with Seagate’s existing 3Gbps and 1.5Gbps SATA interfaces.
Seagate has said it will deliver a demonstration of its latest desktop solution during the Serial ATA International Organization at the Moscone Center in San Francisco between September 22 and September 24.
