It’s the end of era for gaming fans following the news that widely respected print magazine GamePro is to be permanently yanked from shelves after some 22 years of circulation.
Announced through the official GamePro website, the outgoing team thanked fans for their “loyalty, support, and participation in the GamePro community.”
Although print purists may currently be shaking their heads as yet another proud publication falls to the onslaught of Internet copy, it’s worth noting that GamePro’s website is also being shuttered.
That being said, some of the online magazine’s U.S. content will apparently be filtered into sister site PCWorld—although the majority of existing GamePro employees are to lose their jobs.
Neither GamePro nor publisher IDG have offered any formal explanation as to why the magazine has been closed—although poor readership figures are the likely reason.
The sad news isn’t especially surprising when considering that the long-standing monthly print edition of GamePro recently became a quarterly publication due to cost issues.
